2008 was a great year for the livestock of Powder River Rodeo and their partner company D & H Cattle. The famed 2005, 2007 World Champion Saddle Bronc Miss Congeniality was ridden by Shaun Stroh in Vernal, VT for 90 points and the big win at the Dinosaur Roundup in July. Jesse Kruse teamed up with Wyoming’s Miss Congeniality twice in 2008 once for an 88 point win in the semi-finals in Omaha, NE at the River City Roundup Tour Finals in September and for a 91 point win in the semi-finals at the Dallas, TX Championship Tour Rodeo in November.
Wyoming’s Miss Congeniality was named the 2008 Reserve World Champion Saddle Bronc in the PRCA after a phenomenal summer. This was a repeat honor for the II-year old mare.
Wyoming’s Miss Congeniality and Rod Hay rock and rolled the 10’” round of the NFR putting together a score of89 points and a buckle go round win for both Rod and Hank and Lori Franzen.

Touch of Silver, a gray II-year old gelding was only ridden three times in 2008. Billy Etbaur and Touch of Silver won the final four in Dallas, TX at the Tour Championships giving him the big win in November 08. Touch of Silver was not rode at the National Finals Rodeo for three years 2005-2007 and was on the voting ballot for the same period of time for NFR Saddle Bronc. Touch of Silver at the 2007 Dodge National Circuit Finals was awarded the 2lld place top Saddle Bronc of the Finals along with the past World Champion Saddle Bronc Cool Alley owned by Kesler Rodeo.

Billy Etbaur on Smoke Jumper and Chet Johnson on Pearl Jam tied for 87 points to win Guymon, OK in May 08. The saddle bronc win for Guymon 2009 has been duplicated on Powder River stock with Cody Demoss and Black Sheep for 88 points.

A tremendous young horse, Double Take was another round winner in Dallas, TX 2007 and took Jesse Bail to the semi-final win with 88 points in Caldwell, ID at the Wrangler Tour Rodeo in
August 2008. Jesse was bucked off of Miss Congeniality in the finals round.

Big Show a young mare in the Powder River string added a lot of accomplishments to her name this past summer. Big Show, just a four year old placed in the Bucking Horse futurity in May of 2008 then went on to take a few select cowboys to the pay window. Tilden Hooper was 89 points and the go round winner at the Caldwell, ID tour rodeo. Josi Young was 88 points at Bremerton, WA for another great win and then she was selected to the 2008 NFR.

Top bulls from D&H Cattle and Powder River Rodeo were almost impossible to ride this past year. In Belle Fourche, SD out of 50 riders only 3 bulls were covered in 3 days. Vernal, VT only 10 rides out of 45 with Douglas Duncan scoring 91 points to win the Dinosaur Roundup. Estes Park, CO had 9 rides out of 47 and another Douglas Duncan win with 88 points. Rock Springs, WY 5 rides out of 23 Riverton, WYand Sidney, MT had 21 riders at each rodeo and only covered 3 at each show. Plains, MT had 21 Powder River stock keeps coming back riders and only I bull was rode in two days. Castlerock, CO 3 rides out of24 and finally in Caldwell, ID only 20 bulls were covered in 5 days out of 82 bull rides with a Brian Curtis 91 point ride on Velvet Slinger.

Powder River Rodeo had an impressive list of livestock selected for the 2008 National Finals Rodeo and the cowboys pocketed over $52,000 riding these horses in Las Vegas. NFR Horses: Big Show, Moon Beam, Check Out, Big Chill, Pearl Jam, Touch of Silver, Wyoming’s Miss Congeniality.

Powder River Rodeo’s partner D & H CallIe NFR bulls: The Geetus, Big Rig, Greg Dog, Holy Moly, Velvet Slipper, Ricky Bobby, Frosty.

Special Rodeo gives deserving kids fun

During the week of the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo the community comes together to present the Special Rodeo provided for people with special needs.

This is a special event where children and young adults who might otherwise miss out on all the fun can try their hand at roping, riding and rodeo-ing like other basin residents.

It’s a thrill for competitors without the rough and tumble spills designed to build confidence and put a smile on every face.

Rickanne Pummell rides in the Special Rodeo in Vernal

There’s calf-ropin’or steer ropin’ where contestant try their hands at tossing a rope over hay bale heads and much more.

The most popular event, of course, are the horseback rides where participant ride horses led by savvy community volunteers or is escorted by Rodeo Royalty.

The Special Rodeo is open to the public and all are welcome to cheer on participants.

People looking for a little zany fun and entertainment during Vernal’s Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo need look no further than the Wild West Events. They can even take part themselves, said Greg Witbeck, president of the rodeo committee.

Three-person teams can enter at $100 each for any of three events: Wild Cow Milking, Hide Racing or Steer Dressing, Witbeck said. The events are winner-take-all.

People can enter up to the day of the events, but Witbeck encourages people to enter as early as possible. Entrants must be 18 years or older and wear jeans, long sleeve shirts and boots.

To enter, call Witbeck at 435-790-5753.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” Witbeck said

Steer dressing, Thursday:
Steer dressing is essentially just what it sounds like, Witbeck said. A three-man team takes part. One person throws the steer down, another takes giant underpants and tries to pull the underwear up over the steer’s tail. The steer then runs across a finish line. The fastest team wins.

Hide racing, Friday:
Cow Hide Racing is a two-member sport. One rider rides a horse down the arena around a barrel, dragging a piece of cow hide behind it on a rope. The other member jumps on the cow hide and holds on to the rope “for dear life,” Witbeck said.

The horse then runs back to the end of the arena and the fastest time wins.

Wild cow milking, Saturday:
In this sport, a three-person team tries to hold a wild cow still while one member milks her. When the team has enough milk in the bottle, they show the judge. The fastest team wins.
“That is really a crowd pleaser,” Witbeck said.

Not pictured are Tonia Steffie and Mechele Miller

The Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo Riders started about three years ago as an idea for a grand entry, explained Mechelle Miller of Vernal, the vice-president of this year’s Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo.

The Roundup Rodeo Riders open the rodeo events, and it’s up to them to set the stage for the fun and excitement to follow. “They get the energy going and start our rodeo,” said Trinidy Bowden, this year’s committee chair.

This year’s group consists of 20 riders, from age 11 to over 50. Mostly girls and women, there are two boys on this year’s team.

The Roundup Rodeo Riders invest lots of time, effort and practice, said Miller. “You have to make sure your horse is ready, you have to make sure you are ready physically and mentally,” Miller said.

The practice begins two months before the rodeo, and the group as a whole meets one day a week to practice for about two and a half hours. But, they also work at home getting the horse ready.

ZECO is proud to be the sponsor of the 2012 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo Riders!

For the performance the group executes a precise pattern which takes lots of practice, Miller said. Bowden said she feels being on the team is a prestigious position. “They represent one of the largest rodeos in the U.S.,” she said.

“Safety is our number one priority,” Miller stressed. “We have to make sure the tack of the horses, the saddles, everything is in top condition,” she said.

The group is all volunteer. “Zeco sponsorship is also important to the group,” Miller said. “Without the sponsorship we couldn’t progress to getting thing like last year’s ‘Tough Enough to Wear Pink’ flags for the grand entry,” Miller said. “The riders are committed; it’s a pretty fun group and it’s a lot of hard work.”

The hard work, practice and commitment breeds a special camaraderie. “By the end of it we are pretty close. You have partners, and you have to trust that person,” Miller said.

The McMillan Family Trick Rider offer fast-paced fun and family entertainment.

The family includes Mark, dad; Lynette, mom; and eight kids between the ages of 4 and 20: Josh, Caleb, Riley, Callahan, Nick, Davey, Zane, and Josie. Mark and Lynette have four biological kids and have adopted four from the foster care system. They have their own stock contracting rodeo company and the kids are fully involved in the rodeo world.

These kids are being raised on a ranch in Soap Lake, Wash., and were born with the desire to ride and entertain. They come by it naturally as their grandmother, Doreen Sloan, was a trick rider in Madison Square Gardens. Their skill and desire is in their blood.

Mark and Lynette wanted to add something extra into their rodeos so they sent the two girls, Riley and Callahan, to Karen Vold’s Trick Riding Camp near Pueblo, Colo. This started their career. They then progressed to being taught by Joanie Parsons, a trick rider who currently resides in the Northwest and was taught by the legendary Dick and Connie Griffith. The training received from Harry and Karen Vold and Joanie Parsons are the reasons the group has excelled so quickly. These talented and fabulous trainers instilled values in them they will take with them far beyond their trick riding years.

The McMillan Family Trick Riders have been performing at rodeos throughout the Northwest for the past three years. The McMillan siblings will thrill you with their riding stunts and fast paced vaulting. Each one has their own horse that they trust with their lives. A strong faith, the love of family and rodeo, along with lots of hard work and practice makes all that they do possible.
The above information was taking from the McMillan Family Trick Riders website.

The McMillan Family Trick Riders are sponsored by:

The Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo is the perfect place to clown around for professional funnyman Brian Potter.

The famous rodeo clown is set to perform at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo.

Potter has been involved in rodeo for more than 25 years. For the past decade he’s been a PRCA clown, although he’s been clowning around and bull fighting for the past 15 years with other rodeo associations.

In 1997 Potter began his venture as a bull fighter.

After fighting bulls in the area for five years, Potter was asked by a stock contractor to keep the crowd entertained between the events. Soon realizing he had a knack for having fun playing and joking with the crowds, Potter stopped fighting bulls and became a rodeo clown.

The rest of Potter’s story became history. Potter joined the professional ranks of rodeo by becoming a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) in 1998. Now Potter travels across the US to 30 states and even up to Canada as a professional rodeo clown for most of the year, entertaining rodeo crowds.

“I believe a rodeo should be a show, not an event,” Potter, of Newville, Ala., said on his website. “It takes a team effort from the contractor, announcer, clown and the crowd to put on a great show.”

He prides himself on getting the crowd engaged in the show.

“I like to get the crowd really involved, by clapping, cheering, dancing and just having fun,” he said.

Potter’s acts include Moto Cross Mike, Fanny Oakley, Alabama Fire Water, Wildest Rodeo Fan and more.

“The act I am most proud of is with my 9-year-old daughter Cassidy and her 31-inch horse Hershie. Cassidy is one of the youngest trick horse performers in rodeo.

“She performs about eight crowd-pleasing tricks with her horse,” Potter said.

Starting in the rodeo business as a bullrider, Clifford quickly found his talents were as a bull fighter, and so goes the exciting unfinished story of Clifford Maxwell.

Since he has started his career, he has been seen at some prestigious events such as the Senior Pro National Finals, and the National Finals Rodeo bucking bull sale where he
won the freestyle match, and the Turquoise Circuit Finals.

Not only does he carry a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association card, but he has had the privilege to showcase his talents at the Professional Bull Riders Association events.

Maxwell takes the protection of the bull riders very seriously. That is why he is willing to lay his life on the line

Maxwell is married and together he and his wife Kim have two children, their daughter Kasey and son Trevon.

Maxwell loves spending time with his family. He has many hobbies which include archery, fishing, hunting, playing softball and golf.

Luke Kraut, PRCA Bullfighter
Luke Kraut migrated to America from a ranch in Australia in 1995. He became self-employed as a farrier in the Phoenix, Ariz. area.

Kraut soon found his talents as a bull rider. He’s held memberships with the International Professional Rodeo Association, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Professional Bull Riders as a bull rider. He produced some bull riding events, a bull riding school and entered more than 3,000 rodeos from California to Florida.

“But my passion is to provide the highest quality of cowboy protection,” he said. “I have taught my bull fighting skills along side some of the best bull riders around such as Cody Custer, Gary Leffew, Cody Hart, Beau Lindley and Lyle Sankey. I have fought bulls all over the Southwestern United States and in Australia, everything from jackpot bull ridings and amateur rodeos to PRCA and IPRA rodeos and even some PBR events.”

Kraut and his wife, Gina, and their three boys Lane, Cauy and Boyce, have acquired bucking bulls and started a breeding program. They have subcontracted for several contractors in the GCPRA, IPRA, PBR and other rodeos and bull ridings throughout the southwest.

“Rodeo is not only a tradition, but also a lifestyle we hope to pass down to our children,” Kraut said

Rodeoing is tough business. People get busted up.
But the rodeo athletes have someone in their corner. The Justin Sportsmedicine team is always there, ready to help.
Each year, the group of trauma specialists, experienced physicians, athletic trainers and massage therapists travel to more than 125 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association rodeos and treat some 6,000 rodeo-related injuries.
The concept of a mobile sports medicine team began with Dr. J. Pat Evans and Don Andrews in 1980.
“The Justin Sportsmedicine Team is dedicated to providing the best, immediate care to those athletes who are kicked around or bruised a little too hard,” according to the company’s website.
In support of the cowboys who wear their products, the Justin Boot Company became the only sponsor for the program.
The team uses 40-foot trailers with medical travel kits which hold all the equipment needed to treat injured athletes. Program Head Mike Rich, Randy Bloomer of Bloomer Trailers, and Roger Vanhoozer of Cowboy Classics Living Quarters pored over every detail of these mobile units to maximize space, ergonomics and travel durability. Housed inside these custom-made medical facilities are x-ray viewing capabilities, electric stimulation machines, ultrasound units, treatment tables, and cabinets stocked full with tape, braces and other medical supplies typically only seen in well-appointed hospital units.
